The shooting is the deadliest in modern U.S. history, surpassing the massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, a year ago in which an attacker killed 49 people. Police cautioned that the death toll could grow. Paddock appears to have worked as an accountant or auditor.

The shots came from a gunman who was perched high on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino, which is across the street from the concert. In a press release on Monday morning, police said that at least 406 people had been taken to the hospital following the shooting.
