In the wake of Hurricane Maria, San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz has been a visible presence on the ground in the Puerto Rican capital.

Trump has come out with a flurry of boasts in recent days about the positive reviews he said his administration is getting from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands for its relief effort.

"There is a crisis in Puerto Rico where food, fuel, water and medicine is sitting at the docks and not getting out to the remote parts of the island", Democratic Sen. The hurricanes crippled the island's already weakened waste and water treatment plants while fallen trees and strewn debris block roads and cellphone service remains limited.

On Saturday, Trump lit into Cruz and others in Puerto Rico who he said had been "told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump" and wanted "everything done for them", even thought he'd acknowledged the catastrophic scale of the destruction just days before.

"She has demonstrated an empathy and commitment to her people that have taken her to work day and night, very quietly at the beginning,"Duprey said".

Mr Trump, who will visit the island on Tuesday, added that Puerto Rico "was totally destroyed" and "10,000 Federal workers now on the island are doing a fantastic job".

Long acknowledged the difficulties, saying, "Every day we have progress".

Cruz indicated she was losing patience with the United States government: "We will make it with or without you", Cruz said, as she pointed to a pallet of supplies behind her. Maria was not thought to be a huge hurricane like Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, but over the tiny USA territory of Puerto Rico, she has caused more damage that will take time to fix.
