London Mayor Sadiq Khan released a statement on the incident, saying, "A number of people have been injured in an incident involving a auto in Exhibition Road, South Kensington".

"Inquiries to establish the circumstances and motive are under way", police said on Twitter.

The man in his 40s was taken to a north London police station following the collision in South Kensington around 2.20pm on Saturday.

The 47-year-old was held at the scene of Saturday's crash on suspicion of risky driving, and questioned overnight over what police said was a traffic incident with no link to terrorism.

Police originally said a man was arrested at the scene, but later clarified that he had only been detained.

The Metropolitan Police said it was not "terrorist-related" and is appealing for witnesses.

Crowds in the area, which is popular with families and tourists, fled screaming in panic when the vehicle veered onto the semi-pedestrianised Exhibition Road in South Kensington.

The BBC's Chloe Hayward emerged from Natural history Museum immediately after the incident.

Witnesses and footage posted on social media suggested the man was pinned down on the ground by passers-by in the busy tourist spot.

Video captured on scene showed a man on the ground being detained by by a group of people.

The police said they were called at 14:21 p.m. local time to reports of a collision in Exhibition Road, South Kensington.

"The majority of those injured have now been discharged, and there are no serious injuries", police said in a statement Sunday.

Witnesses said the auto mounted the sidewalk near the London museum, which is a major tourist attraction along with the neighboring Science Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum. Helicopters buzzed overhead as ambulances hurried to the scene on Exhibition Road.

There have been five attacks described officially as terrorism this year, three involving vehicles.

As well as the Natural History Museum, the area is also home to the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

British Prime Minister Theresa May was being updated on the incident, according to her office.
