Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has opened up about the injury problems that nearly cost him his career.

With an infection rampant, his doctor found that Cazorla had suffered enormous damage to his ankle. Though, when Cazorla was first ruled out of action, over a year ago now, the Spaniard has had to undergo eight operations since.

"The problem was that it did not heal and the wounds would reopen, become infected".

The Spanish midfielder has not played for Arsenal since October previous year and has had to undergo multiple operations, resulting in the loss of eight centimetres from the tendon in his right ankle. Cazorla explained that specialists out in Spain stated that they had never seen anything like it. "There were eight centimetres of it missing".

Iraq takes over control of Kurdish border crossing into Turkey
The decision comes just weeks after a referendum on independence, which was led by President Masoud Barzani. He said "strong KRG is essential to Iraqi long-term stability and to enduring defeat of Islamic State".

Doctors had to perform a skin graft from Santi Cazorla's arm to his ankle.

A Euro 2008 and 2012 victor with Spain, Cazorla says Arsenal and his former Spain national teammates have been very supportive. The aggressive nature of three bacteria required antibiotic treatments and it was at this stage that fears arose of a blood infection that could mean amputation.

Cazorla, who has won two FA Cups and two European Championships, hopes to return to the pitch in the new year.

The "hardest thing", says Cazorla, is being alone without his family and there is no timescale on his return to Arsenal's London Colney training base.

Benghazi attack suspect detained by United States special forces
"Yesterday, on my orders, United States forces captured Mustafa al-Imam in Libya", President Donald Trump said in his statement . During last year's election campaign, the raid became a focus for Republican attacks on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton .

In an interview with the Daily Express last month, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said his playmaker will need reserve team games to build his fitness. "Everything I have gone through has not been as simple an injury as people have believed", he said.

"No one placed their trust in me but I did and I continue to do so, even though the pain makes me wary", he said.

"He is extremely strong and courageous, and behind his smile is a strength you would not guess".
