Facebook trialling system to combat revenge porn

  • Facebook is asking users to upload nudes to stop revenge porn online

In April the social networking site released reporting tools to allow users to flag intimate photos posted without their consent to "specially trained representatives" from the site's community operations team who "review the image and remove it if it violates [Facebook's] community standards".

ABC News reports that the system is being trialled in Australia and three other countries.

If you're anxious your intimate photos will end up on Instagram or Facebook, you can get in contact with Australi's e-Safety Commissioner. Anytime someone tries to upload a photo, it is checked against that fingerprint and rejected if it matches.

"It would be like sending yourself your image in an email, but obviously this is a much safer, secure end-to-end way of sending the image without sending it through the ether", Inman Grant said.

U.S. to end protection status for Nicaraguan in 2019
While it was due to expire in January 2018, she said it would be delayed by one year "to allow for an orderly transition". TPS is granted to immigrants from a handful of countries that have been beset by crises like war or natural disaster.

Facebook is now testing the system - starting in Australia, but spreading to other parts of the world - but it's not really clear how willing potential revenge porn victims will be to go along with the scheme. There's no word yet on how long the trial may run. For revenge porn posters, who are generally looking to damage an ex-partner's reputation, the opportunity to expose private images to all of their contacts at once is a golden one.

"They're not storing the image, they're storing the link and using artificial intelligence and other photo-matching technologies", the commissioner said.

The nude image would not be stored within the system.

In the age of social media, "revenge porn" has become a serious issue for many people.

The pilot program is also being tested in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom, USA Today reported.

According to the e-Safety Commissioner, one in five women between 18-45 and one in four Indigenous Australians are victims of revenge porn. Facebook will then prevent that particular photo from being shared. According to a 2016 report from the Data & Society Research Institute, about 4% of U.S. internet users have been the victims of revenge porn, and the number rises to 10% for women under the age of 30. Nonetheless, Alex Stamos, Facebook chief security officer, said the company was improving its software in order to prevent such circumvention.

Grant and Facebook, however, are very confident of Facebook's anti revenge porn tool.
