In September, Twitter launched a test that expanded the 140-character limit so that every person around the world could express themselves "easily" in a Tweet, according to its blog. The idea that Twitter users will automatically keep to 140 characters, when they have a full 280 characters to play with, defeats Twitter's own objective of increasing the character length in the first place.

This week, the site allowed everyone to write tweets that are 280 characters long - twice as many as the previous limit.

"This reflects the challenge of fitting a thought into a tweet, often resulting in lots of time spent editing and even at times abandoning tweets before sending", Ms Rosen said. Snapchat, she noted, was much faster to move away from its defining feature - ephemeral messaging.

He also pointed out that Seoul, the South's capital with a population of 25 million, is just 35 miles from the demilitarized zone. It was not pleasant for them, was it?' said Trump, who wore a leather bomber jacket as he addressed the troops.

The change is part of Twitter's plan to attract new users and increase growth.

They've been testing the change for a couple of months. In most cases, it doesn't seem like most people are actually increasing the length of their tweets; we have apparently been trained well. Only five percent of tweets sent during the test and only two percent exceeded their 190-character limit.

Twitter said its tests with a 280-character limit confirmed that it is possible to address cramming without compromising its platform.

Some users have long fought for the extended tweet, claiming 140 was simply not enough to get their point across. However, these users don't have trouble with the 140-character limit due to the density of their languages.

Actor Isiah Whitlock Jr., famous for his role as Clay Davis on The Wire, used the opportunity to remind Twitter of the character's famous catchphrase.
