Federal Bureau of Investigation data show hate crimes increased across the country from 5,850 in 2015 to 6,121 crimes in 2016.

The number of hate crimes in 2016 was 6,121 - about a 5% jump from 2015.

Minnesota reported 119 hate crimes previous year, up from 109 in 2015. Most of the hate crimes were based on race and religion. The majority of victims were targeted due to their race or ethnicity, the report says, with crimes against African-Americans by far the largest share in that category.

Religious bias motivated 1,538 hate crimes past year - over half against Jews, and about one-quarter against Muslims.

In a statement addressing the report Monday, the Anti-Defamation League focused on the overall increase in reported hate crimes.

Some civil rights groups caution that the FBI's annual figures are artificially low because they rely on voluntary reporting.

These numbers correlate with the NCAVP's recent report. But the number of anti-black crimes remained about even with the number reported in 2015.

There were seven anti-Sikh incidents, up from six; 10 anti-Hindu hate crimes, up from five, and 105 anti-transgender hate crimes, up from 73.

Not long after winning the opening stage, Larson wound up in the garage, retired from the race because of an engine issue. This is the fourth straight race he did not complete, two due to engine failure and two to wrecks, dating back to Kansas.

According to The Washington Post, the statistics are not completely representative of all hate crimes that have occurred in the U.S. in a given year.

At the time, Cobb police said the higher number could be attributed to a computer system that lets officers designate an incident as a hate crime.

On Monday, Sessions said the Justice Department is awaiting a full report from a task force on steps it can take to improve training for prosecutors and investigators, boost data collection on hate crimes and partner with local officials and communities.

"No person should have to fear being violently attacked because of who they are, what they believe, of how they worship", said Attorney General Jeff Sessions in a statement after the report was published on November 13, The Washington Post reports.
