Uber just gave its users another reason not to trust the company

  • COMPROMISED Uber has confirmed that hackers stole the personal information of 57 million riders and drivers last year

A massive breach in 2016, which resulted in over 50 million Uber customers and drivers having their personal data compromised, was originally covered up by the transportation technology company, which initially paid the hackers to keep quiet, according to Bloomberg.

It's worth pointing out that while the company is now alerting the authorities, California's data security breach notification law requires disclosure in "the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay".

The two people downloaded the data, which included names, email addresses and mobile phone numbers of Uber users around the world and the names and driver's license numbers of 600,000 USA drivers, Khosrowshahi said.

Khosrowshahi took the position of Uber's CEO on August 30 this year.

"Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi's statement that there is no excuse for what happened and Uber will be putting integrity and trust at the core of every business decision is a welcome message", he said.

He says the hackers went into a coding site, called Get Hub, and allegedly impersonated Uber engineers. But viewing this data breach cover up as an incident that only Uber could commit misses the writing on the wall. Around 7 million drivers were also affected, with hackers accessing around 600,000 United States driver's license numbers.

US Charges Iranian For 'Game of Thrones' Hacking
An Iranian man, Behzad Mesri, has been charged in the massive HBO hack and extortion scheme, NBC News reports . He said Mesri would face consequences even though United States authorities could not immediately arrest him.

The hackers gained access of information that was stored on GitHub.

Downing Street said the hack, which affected 57 million customers and drivers worldwide, had not been reported by the taxi-hailing firm.

Company officials admitted to the cover-up in a recent Bloomberg report.

"If U.K. citizens were affected then we should have been notified so that we could assess and verify the impact on people whose data was exposed", said James Dipple-Johnstone of the U.K. Information Commissioner's Office.

The concerns are not only limited to the breach itself; the strongest ire is coming from regulators over how Uber handled the cyberattack.

Amy Spitalnick, spokeswoman for Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, confirmed the probe Wednesday, but would not comment further.

- Affair site cracked - In August 2015 hackers calling themselves The Impact Team published almost 30 gigabytes of files including the names and credit card data of people who had signed up with Ashley Madison, a website facilitating extra-marital affairs.

Regulators in Australia and the Philippines said they would look into the matter.

"Not only will 2018 see this mandated by GDPR [EU's General Data Protection Regulation], but it is vital to ensure that even in the wake of a breach customers do not lose total faith in a brand's ability to protect their data", he said.

"This wasn't simply a data breach", Rubin said.

Uber said it had fired its chief security officer, Joe Sullivan, and a deputy, Craig Clark, this week due to their role in the handling of the incident. It recently fired Joe Sullivan, its chief security officer, and deputy Greg Clark for their handling of the incident.

And you never know; if the Uber you "hail" doesn't have a driver, it may actually turn up exactly where you want it to. Uber has been offering autonomous auto rides in Ford Fusion and other vehicles for over a year in Pittsburgh.
