  • Houthi Leader Says Saleh Supporters' Behavior 'Unjustifiable', Urges Wisdom

In a televised address, Saleh called for new relations with the Saudi-led coalition, which he and the Houthis have been battling for nearly three years (since March 2015).

Yemen's former President Ali Abdallah Saleh spoke on Saturday in a live TV address to slam the Houthi militia amid fierce battles between Saleh loyalists and the Iran-backed militia in the capital Sanaa.

Saudi Arabia has been locked in a fight with the Houthi rebels since it joined the Yemen war in 2015.

Diab says the Saudi-coalition forces are not too far from the capital, and the Houthis have become widely despised due to shortages of food, water, medicine and money.

Later in the day, Saleh said he was ready for a "new page" in relations with the Saudi-led coalition pounding Yemen if it stopped attacks on his country.

"The decision of Popular General Congress to take initiative and align itself with its people will free Yemen from loyal militias to Iran", he said in a statement released by Saudi SPA Agency, in reference to Saleh's party.

"Saleh's speech is a coup against our alliance and partnership. and exposed the deception of those who claim to stand against aggression", a Houthi spokesman said in a statement carried by the rebels' al-Masirah TV.

"The people have revolted against Houthi aggression", he said.

Saudi Arabia has been leading a coalition of Gulf states against Houthi rebels who ousted the pro-Saudi, internationally-recognized government in Yemen in 2015.

Pointing to worldwide law, Lowcock said, "Wars have rules, and they need to be complied with".

But Houthi rebels, his allies until this week, accused him of a "coup".

Yemen's civil war has killed more than ten thousand people since 2015, displaced more than two million people, caused a cholera outbreak infecting almost one million people and put the country on the brink of starvation.

That government's President, Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi, has been living in Saudi Arabia since the rebels took over the presidential palace early that year.

For his part, leader of Huthi, Abdul Malik al-Huthi, has described Saleh's attitude as "sedition" and has been prepared for tribal arbitration, after warning that main beneficiary of this confrontation is Saudi coalition.

The conflict and a blockade by the coalition has also left more than 20 million people in need of humanitarian aid, created the world's largest food security emergency, and led to a cholera outbreak that is thought to have killed 2,211 people since April.
