A short time ago, Fox News White House Correspondent John Roberts tweeted that a source with knowledge of the investigation into Trump's finances had told him that Mueller's office never sent a subpoena to Deutsche Bank asking for the president's financial records. The $6.7 million in expenses includes $3.2 million attributable directly to the prosecutors and staff working for Mueller, and another $3.5 million from U.S. Justice Department components that have supported the special counsel.

The expenditure report covers May 17, 2017 through September 30, 2017. The majority of the travel costs stemmed from the relocation of Justice Department employees temporarily assigned to the expanding investigation. The bank has settled U.S. and United Kingdom investigations into how it helped Russian clients move money out of the country, but a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice is still outstanding.

Robert Mueller III, the special counsel leading the Russian Federation investigation, on Tuesday publicly filed his team's first expenditure report.

The Whitewater investigation, which lasted much longer, was more costly. "We have confirmed this with the bank and other sources", Dowd wrote in an email. The independent counsel spent more than $60 million over the course of that six-year inquiry into then-President Bill Clinton.

He can also prosecute anyone who interferes in his investigation through crimes including perjury, obstruction of justice, destruction of evidence and intimidation of witnesses. Mueller also disclosed that he secured a guilty plea from George Papadopoulos, who was a junior foreign-policy adviser to the Trump campaign, for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about contacts with Russian operatives.

The Washington Post reported Dec. 3: "President Trump's personal lawyer said Sunday (Dec. 3) that the president knew in late January that then-national security adviser Michael Flynn had probably given Federal Bureau of Investigation agents the same inaccurate account he provided to Vice President Pence about a call with the Russian ambassador". Papadopoulos pleaded guilty. Manafort and Gates pleaded not guilty. Those charges involve allegations of money laundering and other financial crimes related to their political consulting work in Ukraine.
