On December 5, 2017, Kirstjen Nielsen was confirmed as the new Secretary of Department of Homeland Security by the Senate on a bi-partisan 62-37 vote, with just 11 votes from the Senate minority for her confirmation.

The U.S. Senate voted to confirm Kirstjen Nielsen (SFS ), to lead the Department of Homeland Security. Though Duke was expected to resign entirely from the department, she has announced that she will stick around and work directly under Nielsen.

Nielsen, 45, will take the reins of a department with more than 240,000 employees responsible for immigration enforcement, US border and airport security, disaster response, and protecting USA infrastructure from cyber attacks. A lawyer and expert in cybersecurity, Nielsen is the first Secretary of DHS who has worked at the agency before.

Elaine Duke, a civil servant and the DHS deputy secretary, had been serving as acting secretary since Kelly's departure for the White House in July.

She also created and managed the office of Legislative Policy and Government Affairs at the Transportation Security Administration.

Throughout her confirmation process, Ms. Nielsen failed to demonstrate that she would provide the steady experienced leadership - free from political interference from the White House - that the department needs.

Nielsen "is ready to answer this call to duty", Johnson said.

Nielsen said at her confirmation hearing last month that climate change is a crucial issue and said the Trump administration is revising its climate models to better respond to rising sea levels.

Kirstjen M. Nielsen was sworn Wednesday in as the sixth secretary of Homeland Security. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) in November that recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program would not be a priority for deportation in her department.

The independent counsel spent more than $60 million over the course of that six-year inquiry into then-President Bill Clinton. The expenditure report covers May 17, 2017 through September 30, 2017.

"It is my greatest honor to serve as secretary alongside the remarkable men and women of DHS", said Secretary Nielsen. "With her understanding of the challenges facing our nation and her experience in prevention and preparedness, I believe that she will excel as the next Secretary of Homeland Security".

"Under a rational bill these individuals would be able to become lawful permanent residents with a pathway to citizenship", a Reuters report said, quoting Dougherty.

Nielsen received endorsements from Kelly and former DHS secretaries Tom Ridge and Michael Chertoff, who served under former President George W. Bush.

The Justice Department under Sessions, and DHS under Nielsen, will share in enforcing different portions of immigration law.
