  • Eating cheese daily may cut risk of heart attack and stroke, new study suggests

Although many people look at cheese as a sort of "cheat food" due to its high fat content, a new research review suggests that it might not actually be that bad for you.

A meta-analysis of 15 observational studies set out to determine how long-term cheese consumption affects the development and risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), coronary heart disease (CHD), and stroke. The majority of these studies included only people without heart disease and tracked participants for ten years or more.

Until additional studies confirm such findings, it is important to remember that cheese is high in saturated fats, which can be harmful to heart health in high amounts.

Stewart was not involved in the study. Now, a new saturated fat has fallen under the scrutiny of researchers: cheese.

Generally, cheese has always been the scourge of every health-conscious person who wants to make sure they have a balanced diet while still loving themselves enough to partake in the simple joy of one of Earth's greatest pleasures. Those with the lowest risks of these illnesses were those who consumed around 40 grams a day of cheese - a quantity around the size of a book of matches.

"We found that high, compared with low, cheese consumption was significantly associated with 10-14% lower risks of CVD and its subgroups", researchers wrote. But the benefits outweigh the bad when it comes to cheese. No one's saying you should definitely go out and eat 40 grams of cheese a day. "But on the upside, a bit of cheese on a cracker doesn't sound unreasonable". Researchers didn't specify whether one type of cheese was better than the rest.
