  • Star Wars just isn't Star Wars without that fanfare

News of a possible deal first came to light in early November when CNBC reported that Disney had approached 21 Century Fox about a deal to acquire the movie and television assets. Disney's announcement mentions the addition of "extensive worldwide properties, including Star in India and Fox's 39 percent ownership of Sky across Europe, enhances Disney's position as a truly global entertainment company with world-class offerings in key regions".

The sports networks include the YES Network in New York, Prime Ticket and Fox Sports West in Los Angeles, and networks that carry 44 professional teams in Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association and the NHL. Pretty much all of 21st Century Fox's properties are included in this deal, save for a selection of Fox Broadcasting stations including Fox News, Fox Business Network, FS1, FS2, and Big Ten Network.

This move comes amidst reports that Rupert Murdoch, 86, if finally ready to hand the company over to his sons Lachlan and James after a tumultuous year that saw Fox News part ways with its creator Roger Ailes and biggest star Bill O'Reilly following multiple reports of sexual harassment or assault from staffers.

The acquisition will give Disney a new pipeline of shows and movies as it battles technology companies spending billions of dollars on programming shown online to siphon audiences away from traditional TV networks.

In a joint statement the companies said: "Prior to the close of the transaction, it is anticipated that 21st Century Fox will seek to complete its planned acquisition of the 61 per cent of Sky it doesn't already own".

Disney shares also edged lower as investors fretted about dilution from the all-stock deal. A purchase of Fox assets would increase Disney's stake in the popular Hulu streaming platform to 60%. Doctor Doom could show up to fight Iron Man before we know it. Fox is also now the home of the Alien and Predator movies.
