The union said a recognition agreement had to be agreed by midday on Thursday and warned its mandate for strike action could still be implemented "in the absence of a timely agreement".

Irish low-priced carrier Ryanair will move on to meetings with cabin crew unions "in due course", it said on Tuesday, following its surprise shift to talk with pilot unions and after criticism from a German cabin crew union.

Speaking this evening, Bernard Harbour said: "While Ryanair management said they recognised Impact and IALPA (the pilots union) for collective bargaining, they said they were unable to give the union a piece of paper to confirm this recognition".

Speaking after the talks, Ryanair's Chief People Officer Eddie Wilson said he is pleased with how they went.

It forced the budget airline to recognise a pilots' union and brought about talks with IMPACT union scheduled for later today. The airline has already seen significant disruption to its services this year, after issues with pilot scheduling and cabin crew revolts saw thousands of flights cancelled.

It also confirmed it will recognise cabin crew unions.

According to a recording of a meeting obtained by the Irish Independent newspaper, Ryanair executives told pilots at Stansted last week that the airline had "grown too fast" and lost their trust, but was working hard to restore it.
