Apple has been hit with a class-action lawsuit over claims it deliberately slows down older iPhones in order to preserve battery life.

"Instead, Apple's decision to purposefully slowdown or throttle down these devices was undertaken to fraudulently induce consumers to purchase the latest iPhone versions of the iPhone 7, as well as new phones such as the iPhone 8 and iPhone X", the consumers claim.

In a piece by CNN, Apple has stated that their "goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices", but consumers aren't convinced.

Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in mobile devices, and charging capacity naturally wanes with use and time.

Yes, your older iPhone is being slowed by Apple
And because it's so gradual, progressively shorter battery life is ignored by most people, until it's time for a new iPhone. Apple charges US$79 to replace batteries not covered under the phone's warranty.

Apple announced Wednesday that it introduced a feature previous year in its software updates for iPhones 6, 6S and SE "to smooth out the instantaneous peaks" to keep older, or cold batteries from unexpectedly shutting down.

Apple's statement means that, as a battery ages and becomes less responsive, requests for power will be spread out over several cycles to prevent the operating system from crashing or freezing.

A common belief is that Apple uses this tactic of slowing down older generations to draw users into buying newer phones. "A year ago we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions".

Meanwhile, smartphone operating software is perpetually improved with updates that typically increase appetites for electricity.

Census: Illinois loses title of 5th largest state to Pennsylvania
The top 10, in order, were: Texas, Florida, California, Washington, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, Colorado, Tennessee and SC . But this was offset by some 45,000 people from other counties moving to MA , resulting in a net migration increase of 22,000.

"From what I can tell, Apple slows down phones when their battery gets too low, so you can still have a full day's charge", said TeckFire.

Apple design of handsets makes it borderline impossible for people to change batteries themselves.

People anxious about performance could replace batteries, which Apple does for free for iPhones covered by warranty or for $79 if that is not the case.
