A nine-year-old aardvark named Misha was killed and four meerkats are "presumed" to have died after going missing during the fire on Saturday morning.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, and the zoo closed for the rest of the day. The area also contains a petting zoo and four meerkats are also unaccounted for.

TV footage from the scene showed the Adventure Cafe and shop to be badly damaged.

At its worst, the flames spread to a shop and at one point, 70 firefighters were on the scene battling the fire, which sent one person to the hospital.

Vets were called in to monitor the surviving animals and zookeepers were encouraged that there were no other signs of injury. We will continue to monitor them over the coming days.
