  • Trump's busy Christmas Eve: calls to troops, talk of Santa

U.S. President Donald Trump participates in a Christmas Eve video teleconference with members of the military at Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, U.S., December 24, 2017.

It doesn't seem to matter to the group, or Trump, that Merry Christmas was constantly said under President Obama as anyone can see for themselves if they did a quick search of social media or even Google.

Trump also called military families "the greatest people on earth", telling the troops, "We're incredibly thankful for you and for your families". He spoke with Air Force airmen in Qatar, Marines in Kuwait, sailors from the 5th Fleet in the Middle East, Coast Guardsmen in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and soldiers from Kuwait.

Vets were called in to monitor the surviving animals and zookeepers were encouraged that there were no other signs of injury. The cause of the fire has not been determined, and the zoo closed for the rest of the day.

The first lady wasn't the only member of the Trump family sharing photos from their Christmas celebrations. "Every American heart is thankful and we're asking God to watch over you and to watch over your families".

Trump and other conservatives, in past holiday seasons, have slammed political correctness - and Democrats - for saying "Happy Holidays" and not Merry Christmas, arguing the difference was part of a "War on Christmas". The first lady also tweeted out a Snapchat selfie wearing a Santa hat.

He offered encouragement when a caller from Virginia wanted to find building blocks under the Christmas tree.

"I'll make a prediction - Santa is going to treat you well". Trump, who made his name and his fortune building things, said: "That's what I always liked, too".

According to CNN's Dan Merica, Trump repeated the suggestion that he had brought back an interest in Christmas by being elected president.
