United States deals heavy blow to UN funding

25 December, 2017, 19:05 | Author: Genevieve Gibbs

With 128 votes in favor, with 9 against, leaving 35 abstentions, the UN General Assembly approved a non-binding resolution that demands Washington to back down and refrain from moving its embassy to Jerusalem.

A day ahead of the Jerusalem vote, Trump said he'd be closely eyeing the outcome and turning off the spigot for nations voting against the resolution.

"While we are pleased with the results of this year's budget negotiations, you can be sure we'll continue to look at ways to increase the UN's efficiency while protecting our interests", said Ambassador Haley.

The United States (U.S.) has dealt a major blow to the finances of the United Nations (UN) after the country's Ambassador to the organisation Nikki Haley announced a historic reduction in its biennial operating budget. We will no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked.

She said the UN's "inefficiency and overspending" were "well-known".

"Well, we're watching those votes", he added. "We don't care", the President said at the time.

Dershowitz said he also believes more countries will decide to move their embassies to Jerusalem following Trump's action.

On December 18, the Washington Post stated that Nikki Haley's and Trump's choice at the Security Council to veto the Egyptian resolution, facing another fourteen countries "underscores the US isolation on the issue".

As the United Nations was expected to vote in support of a resolution that condemned the U.S.'s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and plans to move its embassy there, President Donald Trump said, "They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars and then they vote against us. well, we're watching those votes".

The 193-member General Assembly voted 128-9, with 35 abstentions, to express "deep regret" over Trump's Jerusalem policy changes, which also include plans to move the United States embassy to that city. Unsurprisingly the vote was referred to as "preposterous" by the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

No other country has its embassy for Israel in Jerusalem, though the Czech Republic has said it is considering such a move.

Rock star Lorde, 21, on Sunday canceled an upcoming tour date in Tel Aviv amid pressures from a movement pressing for an artistic boycott of Israel. No such steps should be allowed that would hamper peace and stability in the Middle East and deprive the people of Palestine of their rights."India has traditionally and consistently considered East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine and India's support to the UNGA resolution re-affirms that stand and commitment".
