  • National Weather Service: Coldest air mass of the season to arrive this weekend; snow Thursday

As far as actual temperatures, lows tonight will drop as lows as the minus teens before climbing in the single digits on Tuesday.

"It's downright bitter cold", he said.

Tonight, partly-mostly cloud skies win out with lows dropping into the single digits. Don't worry, it's going to cool down some more before the party is over on New Year's Eve.

Meteorologist David Epstein breaks down the New Year's weekend forecast
We want you to have a happy and safe New Year! Make sure pets have a warm place to stay and give them fresh food and water. The bitterly cold temperatures won't just stop with Saturday night/Sunday morning, but will continue for several days.

It'll be even colder for the first day of 2018, but before we get there....

A new record low was set in St. Joseph for January 1 with -14 degrees, breaking the old record of -11 degrees set back in 1974. Expect wind chills to range from 0 to 15 below zero tonight. Sub-freezing temperatures will return Wednesday night and persist through at least Friday afternoon.

The National Weather Service is looking at Thursday as the next chance for snow. At those temperatures, exposed skin can suffer frostbite in 5 minutes. Places such as Boston are on track to break the longest stretch of below-20-degrees days in its recorded history. Thermometers only rise into the mid-upper teens with a bone chilling wind chill.

Winter Weather Advisory to go into effect at Midnight
The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory beginning at 6 pm Saturday and extending to noon on Tuesday . Decreasing cloud cover, becoming partly cloudy will allow for additional cooling, with lows 5 to 15 below zero.

As we close the chapter on 2017 and welcome in the new year, we'll do so on an extremely cold note.

Another brutal shot of cold air settles in after our quick hitting snow, Wednesday.

Trump lashes out at Vanity Fair for backtracking on Hillary Clinton video
This wasn't a Hillary hit piece either, for what it's worth! "We made silly new years resolutions for a bunch of politicians". Carter seemed to take the ridicule in stride.
