  • Astronaut John Young, Who Walked on the Moon, Dies at 87

"John was one of that group of early space pioneers whose bravery and commitment sparked our nation's first great achievements in space".

Young is the only astronaut who took part in the Gemini, Apollo and space shuttle programmes.

"NASA and the world have lost a pioneer", the USA space agency said in a statement.

We're saddened by the loss of astronaut John Young, who was 87. "He was always questioning what we were doing and why we were doing it". Young, a Navy Test Pilot, was selected as an astronaut in 1962. His earliest voyage into space was on Gemini 3, the agency's first two-man flight, commanded by Virgil "Gus" Grissom, in 1965.

He was also the first to make six spacewalks and, at one point, held the record for longest time spent in space, according to NASA. Young and his crew undertook each aspect of that subsequent mission except for an actual moon landing.

John Young salutes on the surface of the Moon on April 21, 1972. He was the ninth man to walk on the moon. Bouncing along the lunar surface in a four-wheeled rover, he and Charlie Duke collected 200 pounds of rock specimens.

While Young retired from NASA in 2004, he remained a constant figure at the agency, Young remained at NASA until 2004, when he retired at the age of 74.

"Earth's geologic history is pretty clear: It says, quite frankly, that single-planet species don't last", Young said, according to a 2004 Houston Chronicle story.

But, Khloe wasn't buying what she was selling, as you can see by the way the rest of the conversation played out. She quipped: "They say that men take on sympathy cravings, or pregnancy or whatever".

Young's fifth space mission was as commander of the inaugural flight of NASA's first space shuttle, Columbia, in 1981.

After his return to Earth, the shuttle would become Young's next focus. It was the first time NASA had ever launched a manned mission without first testing unmanned versions of the same vehicle.

In his autobiography, he revealed that he felt responsible for the shuttle accidents of the Challenger (1986) and Columbia (2003). "Current Jonson Space Center Director Ellen Ochoa today said" It would be hard to overstate the impact that John Young had on human space flight. Not many people argued with Young. "In retrospect, it's just so damn hard to believe that we hadn't pinpointed the problem".

Young was born on September 24, 1930, in San Francisco and grew up in Orlando, Florida. The family moved to Cartersville, Georgia, and then Orlando, Florida, as his father sought work during the Depression. From there, he joined the US Navy, served aboard the USS LAWS during the Korean War, and went on to attend the Navy Test Pilot School.
