  • HP issues voluntary recall involving lithium-ion battery packs

HP has issued a "worldwide voluntary safety recall" following fears that several of its laptop models that are experiencing battery problems that could result in them catching fire.

If you or anyone at your organisation is now using an HP laptop, downloading the utility or looking up the model number to see if the device's battery has been recalled is an absolute must to prevent a fire from occurring at your home or workplace.

With customer safety as a key priority, HP is providing a new BIOS update that will place the affected battery in "Battery Safety Mode". Some of the affected batteries were also sold as replacements.

They say she committed other fraud, including cheating the New York City Council out of discretionary funds meant for non-profits. For example, Harris fraudulently applied for FEMA temporary housing assistance after Hurricane Sandy, according to investigators.

'This action pertains to 0.1 per cent of the HP systems sold globally over the past two years'.

The laptops were sold from December 2015 through December 2017 at a number of authorized retailers including Best Buy and Amazon, as well as HP's own website. Customers would need to order a new battery that will be sent to you for free and if it's a non-user replaceable battery, HP will arrange an authorised technician to perform the swap.

This follows eight reports of lithium-ion batteries overheating and/or melting, and in one case causing a first-degree burn to someone's hand, with three further cases citing resulting property damage (presumably caused by fire, of course) to the tune of $4,500.

If the validation process identifies a battery as being eligible for replacement, a BIOS update will be applied and the system will reboot. The process involves downloading and installing the Battery Program Validation Utility provided by the company to quickly and easily determine whether or not the battery needs to be replaced, and the whole process only takes up 30 seconds of customers' time.

Why this matters: Battery recalls happen every so often, often due to manufacturing issue. While in "Battery Safety Mode", the laptops can still function safely while connected to an HP power adaptor.

These batteries may have also been sold as accessories or replacement batteries for the HP ZBook Studio G4 Mobile Workstation or for any of the preceding products through HP or an authorized service provider. When this mode is enabled, the battery will be discharged and it will no longer charge until the mode is disabled.
