  • Trump 'got the message', London mayor says

Then-president George W Bush cited security as the main reason for the sale, while U.S. officials said it would have taken several years and hundreds of millions of dollars to bring the Grade II-listed London Chancery Building up to scratch.

Donald Trump has made a surprise arrival in London to visit the new U.S. embassy - in wax form.

But Trump said his decision, announced in a late-night tweet, was due to concerns about the embassy's move from the elite Mayfair district to a far less fashionable area of London south of the Thames River.

Trump's visit was expected to be mired with mass protests - a factor is likely to have influenced his decision.

Stage set for Israeli PM's six-day visit, starting Sunday
PM Modi would be accompanying Netanyahu to Gujarat on Wednesday where he will be welcomed with a roadshow in Ahmadabad. Netanyahu also highlighted the historic nature of Modi's visit to Israel and strengthening of bilateral relations.

The funds were raised nearly entirely by selling off other properties in London. Political observers noted that the move could also be motivated by the possibility of demonstrators protesting Trump's visit.

British newspapers say Trump's cancellation was actually linked to fears of mass protests, with London's Mayor Sadiq Khan adding that Trump "got the message", reports the London Evening Standard.

Trump's United Kingdom visit was provisionally scheduled for February 26 and 27, although he was not due to meet the Queen until a full state visit at a later date. The Daily Mail reported that Trump had backed out because he was unhappy about arrangements for the visit, which was billed as a "working" visit rather than a full state visit that could include a meeting with Queen Elizabeth.

"A poll from a year ago found that about 4% of Britain's population - roughly 2.5 million people - would protest a state visit by Trump".

Karen Bradley named new NI secretary
DUP leader Arlene Foster said: "This is clearly a hard time for not only James but for Cathy, his wife and his children". Her website states this childhood experience gave her "a unique introduction to people from all walks of life".

Museum officials said the decision was made spontaneously after Trump tweeted late Thursday from the United States that he wouldn't be at the ceremonial opening next month.

The US Government has attempted to purchase the building before, but the previous Duke reportedly said he would only sell it if the (considerable) land confiscated from his family during the War of Independence was returned.

The president and the prime minister have a very, very good relationship.

Khan, who has led opposition to the prospect of a visit by the U.S. president, had a row with Mr Trump over the response to the London Bridge terror attack last June. "It seems he's finally got that message", Khan tweeted. "The U.S.is one of our oldest and most valued allies and our strong partnership will endure", May's spokesman Blain said.
