Gusts of almost 90 miles per hour caused the cancellation of hundreds of flights at Amsterdam's bustling Schiphol airport, according to the Associated Press.

The airport also said "a few roof plates" were detached from the terminal building due to the high winds.

Social media channels in the Netherlands were filled with images of cargo containers falling off ships, riders being blown off their bicycles and in particular a roof that peeled off a Rotterdam apartment block.

The huge storm caused nine deaths in northern Europe and left air and rail traffic in chaos.

At least 11 people were killed by the storm, which brought winds topping 90mph.
