  • YouTube Advertisements Used to Secretly Mine Cryptocurrency

Users may not be able to avoid the ads altogether when visiting YouTube, but one way to block them is by using Javascript from browsers.

Reports first started to spread on Twitter, with a handful of people claiming their antivirus software were notifying them that hints of cryptocurrency mining has been detected as they watched YouTube videos. It is unclear where the ads came from or who managed to get them on YouTube.

Although the cryptocurrency mining ads operate in secret and seem quite sophisticated, they're actually build off of a public javascript code called Coinhive.

Attackers took advantage of Google's advertising platform to put cryptomining currency code inside YouTube ads.

An independent security researcher, Troy Mursch, told Ars Technica that YouTube was likely targeted because "users are typically on the site for an extended period of time". The longer users are on the site, the more time the script has to mine for cryptocurrency. If you're noticing an unusually slow operation, consider downloading an antivirus program to see whether you're being affected by these secret cryptocurrency mining ads. Running a mining tool on a regular computer can heavily consume processor resources and severely degrade performance even to the point blocking its owner from using the machine productively. It's not possible to know how many coins the user has generated so far. A deeper look into the problem showed five malicious domains had enjoyed a five-fold increase in traffic since January 18, with Google DoubleClick ads turning out to be the source of traffic.

In a recent statement, the web search giant warned that mining cryptocurrencies through website ads is abuse that infringes the company's policies. We enforce our policies through a multi-layered detection system across our platforms which we update as new threats emerge.

Google reportedly shut down the ads in less than two hours after being detected.
