The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, one of the deadliest against the military in recent years. They allegedly carried out the attack on the orders of Taliban leader Maulana Fazlullah. All injured were shifted to a nearby hospital.

The security forces had cordoned off the area after the attack and had closed the main road for traffic.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi condemned the attack. Pakistan says militants who escaped from Swat and elsewhere are now operating out of the Kunar province in neighbouring Afghanistan.
