New Orleans police confirmed a Black Lives Matter activist was shot and killed this week in New Orleans.

Muhiyidin d'Baha at a January 2016 press conference advocating against the release of former North Charleston police officer Michael Slager.

They say that Muhiyidin d'Baha, better known as Moya or Moye, was riding a bike near the intersection of Bienville Court and North Roman Street around 1:30 a.m. when he was shot.

D'Baha's niece, Camille Weaver, is trying to raise money through a GoFundMe campaign so the family can bring his body home to Charleston.

Local law enforcement was still investigating the circumstances of the shooting and had not identified a suspect.

The Black Lives Matter movement was born out of a viral hashtag following a jury's acquittal of George Zimmerman for the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

Moye's family told SC news outlets he was Black Lives Matter organizer Muhiyidin d'Baha, whose legal name was Muhiyidin Elamin Moye. On Tuesday, friends and family gathered outside Charleston City Hall to mourn the loss of the local Black Lives Matter leader, reports CBS affiliate WCSC.

D'Baha made media headlines one year ago when he was arrested after he jumped over a barricade and snatched a Confederate flag away from an alt-right protester at the College of Charleston.

"Muhiyyidin was a warrior for this community and a lovely soul", said one person who donated to help cover d'Baha's funeral costs.

During the interview, d'Baha said: "Having a national identity is still something we're hunting for", adding: "Unfortunately we can't say we're American if we don't get to experience the freedom, the liberty and the equity of that".
