The Case Against Netanyahu: Highlights From the Police Investigation

  • Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

In what could have an impact on Netanyahu's ability to remain in office, Israeli police have recommended that the country's leader, known as Bibi, be charged with fraud, bribery, and breach of public trust.

The potential charges against Netanyahu include receiving $300,000 in gifts from two billionaires in exchange for tax breaks and political favors.

While Netanyahu has denied any wrongdoing in either case, police have conducted an investigation into gifts the Prime Minister reportedly received from wealthy businessmen, including billionaire filmmaker Arnon Milchan, in what has been dubbed "Case 1000", or the "1000 Affair".

The police are also recommended that Mozes be indicted for bribery in the alleged deal between him and Netanyahu.

The police announcement will increase pressure on Netanyahu to resign, though he has given no indication that he plans to do so, adopting a combative tone as the investigations have circled closer to him. The final decision on whether or not to bring charges against Netanyahu lies with Israeli attorney general Avichai Mandelblit. But it would certainly cripple his ability to govern in what is already a shaky coalition government of hard-liners and liberals.

Milchan or New Regency Productions, a Hollywood movie studio he founded and chairs, have produced more than 100 films, including recent Oscar best picture winners 12 Years a Slave, Birdman, and The Revenant.

After about a week it seemed to correct itself on its own, but months later another headache brought about an Australian accent. I just feel that people don't really understand how it feels to have your voice changed ", Myers said in an interview.

"In connection with Milchan, the police [department's] position is that sufficient evidence has been established on the suspicions of bribery".

The case claims the two allegedly granted Netanyahu various gifts over a number of years.

Netanyahu later said in a televised address that he had never sought to make personal gain from politics.

In news that send shockwaves through the political system, it emerged that Yair Lapid, leader of the opposition Yesh Atid party, had given testimony about the Netanyahu efforts to benefit Milchan he saw during his term as finance minister.

In Case 2000, police have investigated conversations Netanyahu had with Arnon "Noni" Mozes, the owner of one of Israel's leading newspapers, Yedioth Ahronoth, which is regularly critical of the Prime Minister.

In all, the merchandise was worth more than one million shekels ($A392,000), the statement said.

"The only thing that motivates me is the interest of the state", he said, while pointing out that he has always been a victim of slander.

Pre-empting the police recommendations, Netanyahu told the public to expect them and did his best to minimize their importance.

Police are expected to announce that they have uncovered enough evidence to prosecute Netanyahu for corruption in two separate cases, reports the Jerusalem Post.

Netanyahu's time as premier is fast approaching Israel's revered founding father David Ben-Gurion's 13 years.

Netanyahu has repeatedly proclaimed his innocence, insisting that investigators will find he did nothing wrong.

Netanyahu's lawyers have said the presents were simply tokens of friendship and no quid pro quo was given.
