  • House declares pornography 'public health risk'

"NOW IS THE TIME", state Democratic Rep. Kionne McGhee tweeted Wednesday, when his procedural move that would have allowed the Florida House to debate the bill was shut down.

Nearly all 71 lawmakers who voted against considering the measure have an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association.

Florida House Bill 219 would largely ban the future sale of assault weapons in the state, with exceptions made for law enforcement and military personnel.

They are also planning a mass rally March 24 in Washington, D.C., to demand an end to gun violence and school shootings.

The vote followed an earlier session in which Florida legislators declined to hold hearings on a bill banning high-capacity magazines and assault rifles such as the one used last week by suspected gunman Nikolas Cruz to kill 17 students and teachers at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The motion to consider the bill failed, 36 to 71.

The same day, the Florida Legislature voted to pass a bill declaring pornography a health risk, with a similar version already in the Senate.

The resolution states a need for education, research and policy changes to protect Floridians, especially teenagers, from pornography. He promised to push for that kind of legislation while on the campaign trail in 2016 after the last major mass shooting in his state - the Pulse Nightclub massacre that left 49 dead - and has been stonewalled by Republicans since.
