Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser - who is leading White House efforts to jumpstart Israeli-Palestinian peace talks - is fighting to retain his access to highly classified information.

"He's going to do what's right for the country, and I have no doubt he'll make the right decision", he said. In the case of Mr. Kushner, a wealthy NY businessman, his financial links have taken a long time to examine.

"The new policy announced by General Kelly will not affect Mr. Kushner's ability to continue to do the very important work he has been assigned by the president", Lowell said last week.

In recent weeks it has emerged that Mr Kushner is still on a temporary security pass despite serving in the president's inner circle for the a year ago and sitting in on high-level intelligence briefings.

In the aftermath of the Rob Porter scandal, Kelly declared that White House staffers whose security clearances have been pending since June 1 would no longer be able to see classified information.

Manafort Faces New Counts of Tax, Bank Fraud in Russia Probe
They also admitted to directing a covert lobbying campaign in Washington for the betterment of Ukrainian interests. Manafort was sacked from the Trump campaign in August 2016 when evidence of his ties to Yanukovych came forward.

According to officials quoted by the Times, Kushner is pressing to regain access to classified information, including the presidential daily report or "PDB".

In its latest report, the Post said Rosenstein, in his phone conversation with McGahn, meant to give an update on the status of Kushner's background investigation.

On Friday, at the White House news conference, Trump complained that the vetting process takes "months and months and months" even for people who don't have complex financial issues.

Porter had been operating on an interim security clearance for a year before he left over allegations that he abused his ex-wives.

That is what President Donald Trump told reporters Friday, declaring that his daughter's husband, Jared Kushner, had "been treated very unfairly".

Palestinian dies in Israeli detention
However, it is also a disputed territory, contested by both Israel and Palestine, which sees it as a capital of its future state. Ambassador Anatolio Ndong Mba called the fact that they came to the council "very, very important" and "a good sign".

"I won't make that call".

Options included giving Mr. Kushner a lesser clearance that would allow him to keep doing his job.

In the call, Rosenstein did not say whether the information that had come to the attention of the Justice Department was learned by the FBI in its standard background clearance investigation of White House staff members.

Administration officials have tried to portray the delay in Kushner's security clearance as normal, and told Politico that high level administration officials who require the highest clearance undergo heightened scrutiny. Much, but not all, of Kushner's work on the two issues singled out by Kelly are handled at those lower levels, an official said. One other said Rosenstein did not discuss the nature of the ongoing investigation.

At his news conference Friday, Trump defended his son-in-law, who he noted does not draw a salary.
