European Central Bank ever so slowly edges closer to interest rates rise

  • Euro jumps as ECB hints at the end of quantitative easing

Thursday's positive signal may reflect discord on the ECB's 25-strong governing council, made up of the executive board and governors from the 19 member states' central banks.

The ECB's governing council tweaked the wording of the state it issued after its latest monthly meeting, removing a commitment to increase the "size and/or duration" of its bond purchasing programme if necessary in the event of an economic downturn.

"The change in language in the ECB's forward guidance suggests that if economic conditions continue to improve QE may well end in September", said Jacob Deppe, head of trading at Infinox.

For its part, the Bank of Japan, which abandoned setting short-term interest rates altogether, is also keeping steady asset purchases that have been in place in various forms for most of almost 20 years and have greatly intensified recently. The risks surrounding economic growth were still described as "broadly balanced", although "rising protectionism" was noted as a downside risk. "It also mostly shut down expectations by some that early 2019 rate hikes were on the cards".

"As we pointed out before, sooner or later, the strong euro had to have some impact". U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to sign the tariff order on Thursday, with an announcement planned for 3:30 p.m.

"An escalation of trade wars would lead to greater political uncertainty and a weaker U.S. dollar".

A higher euro also threatens the ECB's inflation goal by sapping exports and economic growth and making imports cheaper.

"While dropping a sentence that has been in the ECB's statement since 2016 is a significant change, Draghi gave his best trying to downplay exactly this significance during the press conference", said Carsten Brzeski, eurozone economist at ING. But he said such disputes should be worked out among trade partners, not decided by measures initiated from one side.

Liverpool veteran James Milner convinced Champions League challenge is on
This fixture has seen 16 red cards in the Premier League - only the Merseyside derby has produced more in the competition (21). However, that was one of few moments that got the home fans off their feet as Liverpool settled on their substantial lead.

Vistesen at Pantheon added: "Draghi stuck to the main dovish elements of the ECB's communication strategy: underlying inflation remains subdued and ample monetary policy stimulus is still needed to bring inflation back to target". The changed wording indicates that the European Central Bank is increasingly confident about the outlook for economic growth, with euro zone GDP expected to expand by 2.4 per cent. compared to a previous estimate of 2.3 per cent.

He also reminded Trump that previous trade wars had typically led to a strengthening of the dollar.

While ECB inflation projections have consumer prices hovering around the 1.5% inflation rate by the end of 2018 and rising gradually over the medium term, Draghi told reporters that underlying inflation measures will remain subdued - so "victory can not be declared yet". Against the pound, the euro was 0.13% lower at £0.8916 and fell 0.65% to Y130.81 versus Japan's yen.

Eurozone stocks got a boost from the European Central Bank, with Frankfurt's DAX 30 adding 0.9% at 12,355.57 points and the Paris CAC 40 climbing 1.3% at 5,254.10 points.
