  • Militants 'Capture District Headquarters' In Afghan Province

Violence has been on the rise as Afghan security forces struggle against a surge in attacks by anti-government fighters since the drawdown of foreign forces over the past three years.

Afghan security forces recaptured a district headquarters in western Farah province on Monday, just hours after the Taliban overrun the police and administrative offices, killing eight policemen including their local commander, a spokesman said.

"The Afghan forces have warned the Taliban either to surrender or die on the battle field", said Bakhtawer.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying 15 police officers were killed and several military vehicles seized along with a large quantity of ammunition.

In recent months, Farah province has witnessed an increase in attacks by insurgents against security forces and local officials have requested the deployment of more forces in the province.

Six other police officers were killed in a separate assault in the provincial capital.

The province is a centre of opium cultivation and poppy farmers are often taxed by the Taliban to help fund their fight against security forces.

"There is no word on whether these people have been killed, wounded or escaped the area", he said.

Is This The End For Toys "R" Us?
Bloomberg reported on Thursday that Toys "R" Us is making preparations for a liquidation of its bankrupt USA operations. That became apparent on Monday when the stocks of two of the world's biggest toy makers tumbled in USA trading.

The provincial government said 13 militants were also killed in the fighting.

No comment was immediately available from USA military headquarters in Kabul.

On February 24, at least 18 Afghan soldiers were killed after Taliban militants attacked a security checkpoint in the province. It is conceivable, and conceivably desirable, that USA forces will be in Afghanistan, lending intelligence, logistical and even lethal support to that nation's military and security forces for another 1,000, perhaps 6,000, days.
