Thousands of passengers were left stranded on Tuesday, March 13, when IndiGo and GoAir, two of India's biggest low-priced carriers, cancelled as many as 65 flights after Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) grounded 11 of their A320Neo planes with faulty Pratt & Whitney engines. After the incident, the airlines ascertained that none of these affected engines shall be operated with IndiGo.
The assembled fuselage of an Airbus A320 narrow-body passenger twin-engine jet airliner moves across the Airbus SE factory floor in Hamburg, Germany.
Keeping in mind the safety of aircraft operations, A320nes fitted with PW1100 engines beyond ESN 450 have been grounded with immediate effect by DGCA.
The DGCA has also asked IndiGo and GoAir not to refill these engines which are spare with them in their inventory.
The DGCA then grounded 11 planes (eight of IndiGo and three of GoAir) due to recurring engine malfunctions. The regulator said it will make further decisions on the matter after consulting with the European Aviation Safety Agency and engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney. It and GoAir said they'd complied with the DGCA directive.
The DGCA's order today came after in-flight shutdown was reported on three aircraft that were being operated with one affected engine. "We are altering flight schedules and communicating the same to those affected by the last minute changes; we are making all possible arrangements to minimize the impact", GoAir said in a statement.

There are around 45 A320 neos, powered by P&W engines, in the country.
The current issue with the IndiGo flights pertains only to its A320neo aircraft fleet that are using Pratt & Whitney PW1000G engines.
