The White House insists President Donald Trump still wants to raise the minimum purchasing age for assault weapons.
It's no secret that Donald Trump and the NRA are on the same page, even as the White House does their best to walk a fine line and appear sympathetic to mass shooting victims.
The White House announcement came a day after Trump, speaking about the opioid problem, criticized policy commissions during a rally in Pennsylvania, saying "we can't just keep setting up blue-ribbon committees".
Seventeen people were killed in last month's shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, prompting a national conversation about gun laws, fierce advocacy for stronger gun control from surviving students and, initially, a move from Trump to buck his allies at the National Rifle Association.
He then turned toward Sen. The administration also announced support for legislation sponsored by Republican Majority Whip John Cornyn of Texas and Democratic Sen.
"I like taking the guns early", Trump said at a meeting of leaders of Congress. "Because you're afraid of the NRA, right?" Without mentioning Trump or his plan, the NRA stumped for solutions that mirror details listed in it nearly verbatim and also threw support behind "risk protection orders" to strip away guns from individuals who threaten violence or pose a danger to themselves or others. Trump wrote in one Twitter message.
"I don't know", the president said in February.
On the issue of vetting gun buyers, the White House has endorsed minor legislation in Congress to improve federal and state databases used for background checks by licensed dealers. "Things are moving rapidly on this, but not much political support (to put it mildly)".
Trump met with the NRA privately at the White House twice last month as he weighed his response to the shooting. "But he can't make them happen with a broad stroke of the pen". Pressed by reporters about the apparent backtracking, a senior administration said the age issue was "a state-based discussion right now" and would be explored by DeVos' commission. "You have to have some congressional component to do some of these things, and without that support, it's not as possible". Both are broadly popular on Capitol Hill, although a handful of Republican senators are objecting to speedy passage of the background check bill.

One of the key areas on guns where Trump seems to have retreated is on a proposal to raise the minimum age at which individuals can buy rifles from 18 to 21.
Rather than push for a sweeping federal law, Trump wants state and local officials to set the age limits.
Still, Trump argued that this was progress.
He added that court rulings were being watched before acting on changing the age limit from 18 to 21.
Mr. Trump has also vowed to ban the use of bump stock devices that enable guns to fire like automatic weapons. "Armed guards OK, deterrent!" There's overwhelming public support for the issue, plus Democrats in Congress have been calling for common-sense gun control measures for years.
