  • Earlier this week Zuckerberg appeared on CNN to apologise for the data breach on Facebook

Even though US lawmakers have been vocal of Facebook in recent weeks, members of Congress have not formally pushed for any new data collection legislation.

Facebook has announced a raft of changes to give users more control over their data in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica revelations.

Instead of spanning across 20 different screens, settings can now be accessed from a single page.

A lot of companies would be trapped by the conventions and their legacies of what they've built, doing a privacy change - doing a privacy change for 350 million users is not the kind of thing that a lot of companies would do.

Finally, Facebook will allow users to securely manage information and posts shared on the platform, whether its downloading this data to keep or deleting it from the site altogether.

"While [data-broker integration] is common industry practice, we believe this step, winding down over the next six months, will help improve people's privacy on Facebook", said a corporate blog post attributed by the company to Graham Mudd, Facebook's director of monetization product marketing.

In Facebook settings for your account, right below the link to deactivate it, there is an option to download a copy of all your Facebook data.

A new Privacy Shortcuts menu has also been created for users to control data in just a few taps, with clearer explanations of how the controls work. USA consumer protection agency, the Federal Trade Commission, on Monday confirmed it had opened an investigation into whether Facebook mishandled private data or violated a 2011 agreement, which settled an earlier probe.

According to a blog post by Erin Egan, VP and Chief Privacy Officer and Ashlie Beringer, VP and Deputy General Counsel, the Facebook mobile app has been redesigned to make it easier for users to find the privacy settings they need.

"You can go here to delete anything from your timeline or profile that you no longer want on Facebook", the company wrote in the announcement. The changes are meant to "better spell out what data we collect and how we use it", Egan and Beringer wrote, adding that this is "about transparency - not about gaining new rights to collect, use, or share data". Facebook confirmed it has "strict processes" to review requests from law enforcement and said it only turns over data if there's a "legal and factual basis for their request".

Facebook also said it plans to update its privacy policy and terms of service in the coming weeks, but gave no further details.
