  • Pulse nightclub shooter's father was an FBI informant

The widow of Omar Mateen, the gunman who killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in the U.S. state of Florida, has been acquitted of two charges related to the June 2016 attack.

She was charged with providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization, as well as obstruction of justice in relation to Mateen's 2016 massacre that killed 50 people.

Mateen killed 49 people and wounded 58 others at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla., on June 12, 2016, before he was killed by police.

Defense attorneys argued that Mateen was unfaithful and purchased a father's day gift and travel for the whole family that would take place after the attack-purchases that don't seem to align with someone who knew they were about to die in a shooting.

In a statement emailed to WFTV, the foreman of the jury said jurors were "convinced" Salman knew what Mateen was planning to do, but it was not their job to determine if she was aware of a potential attack.

Ms Salman's statement to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the hours after the attack appeared to play a key role in the case.

Law enforcement officials at the scene of the Pulse nightclub in June of 2016. A conviction could have brought life in prison. She falsely claimed that her husband didn't use the internet in their home, that he had deactivated his Facebook account years earlier, that he had one gun when he had three, and that he wasn't radicalized, they said. She said she wanted to see Noor Salman and look her in the eye and talk to her about what kind of impact this tragedy has had on people like her family.

Sarah C. Sweeney, an assistant United States attorney, declared that Salman thought Pulse was inside of Disney World, which they indeed had visited, so she was confused as to where Pulse "was". Salman insisted she had nothing to do with her husband's rampage.

Salman did not testify during the trial.

During the trial, which began March 3, the defense argued that Salman had a low IQ, a childish nature and was dominated by her abusive husband.

"It's a awful, random, senseless killing by a monster", Mr Swift said during closing arguments.

Noor Salman walked out of federal courthouse in Florida after being acquitted of all charges related to the Pulse nightclub shooting. "Her only sin is she married a monster", Moreno said.

Since the defense launched its case Monday, Mateen's family and friends described her as a peaceful person and a good mother.

"Nothing harmful would come out of her", a friend of Salman's who was identified only as Ms. Ahmed told jurors, according to CNN affiliate WKGM.

The revelation threatened to upend the case against Salman, but the judge denied the motion, saying it was not relevant to the case against her.

"On this Good Friday, the family wants to say we're very sorry for the family members and friends of the 49 victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting and also the survivors of that disgusting attack", a representative from Salman's family said.

Sweeney said Mateen's initial plan was to attack Disney Springs, a commercial district adjacent to Disney World.
