Apple Nabs Google AI Boss to Boost Siri's IQ

With the recent backlash on Facebook, Google & Microsoft making User data accessible for Private firms to manipulate, with European Union even stepping towards to charge a digital tax for these firms, Apple appointment make even more exciting who is committed to building a leakproof, privacy-focused AI machine.

John Giannandrea has been with Google since 2010 when the search giant acquired the startup Meteweb where he was serving as CTO, so it'll be interesting to see what sort of impact this has on the company going forward. The hire is an absolute victory for Apple. Now that John Giannandrea is with Apple, we can be sure that Apple will receive access to Google's prized information.

Giannandrea served as chief technology officer for Metaweb, but his prominence in Google grew as it increasingly focused on machine learning and artificial intelligence. Given the rise of home speakers and the public's increasing comfort with speaking to a disembodied AI voice, Apple will want to catch up with its rivals to improve Siri's abilities. So on Monday, when Giannandrea was said to have left Google, he immediately became one of the sought-after free agents in technology - but it looks as if Apple had him locked up the entire time. Giannandrea's technology formed the basis of Google's "Knowledge Graph", which quickly surfaces information at the top of the search.

Google's Senior VP of Engineering John Giannandrea (L) and TechCrunch moderator Frederic Lardinois speak onstage during TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2017 at Pier 48 on September 19, 2017 in San Francisco, California. He also said that Giannandrea shares its commitment to privacy and its thoughtful approach as it make computers even smarter and more personal. Only in the previous year or so has Apple loosen its grip on its researchers enough to allow them to publish papers in the AI community. Siri also lags behind Amazon's Alexa which is now the leader in the smart home industry.

Apple once held the top spot for voice assistants - for Siri - but lost the lead to Google's Assistant and Amazon's Alexa.

Interestingly, Apple's less than impressive progress in AI can be considered to be the result of its own data collection and privacy policies.

Engineers with A.I. expertise are some of the most sought-after people in Silicon Valley, with salaries sometimes exceeding eight figures.
