  • National Guard troops headed for border Friday night

Trump is not the first United States president to send soldiers to the border with Mexico: in 2006, George W. Bush ordered the deployment of some 6,000 members of the National Guard, and Barack Obama assigned 1,200 members in 2010.

That is not true, he has made a request to a number of states' governors to send National Guard units there. "There's nothing that I see right now happening on the U.S. -Mexico border that would constitute an insurrection", said retired Adm. James Winnefeld, who was vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President Barack Obama, told CBS News this week, adding, "If the president tried to use military forces in an inappropriate way... he would be violating federal law".

The National Guard is expected to help border agents in tasks of 'aerial detection, transportation, fix of the border wall and logistical support, ' the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) said.

While the reaction to the much larger 6,000 troop deployment in 2006 was overwhelmingly negative, there was the sense that Bush needed to get tough on border security to get Congress on board with comprehensive immigration reform, Wilson said. Currently, there are federally deployed troops in the Middle East, said Christopher Ingersoll, a spokesman for the Oregon National Guard.

Some governors from other states indicated they would resist any attempt to send National Guard troops from their states, if asked by the administration.

Arizona's Gov. Doug Ducey responded on Twitter that his state "welcomes this enhanced security", and that he appreciated the opportunity to discuss the plan with Nielsen as well as Abbott, Martinez and California's Gov. Jerry Brown (D) on Thursday in hopes of getting his support. "I informed the Trump Administration that the Arkansas National Guard will support @POTUS's effort to increase border security".

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) said Thursday that the California governor, who has previously accused the Trump administration of "basically going to war" with his state over immigration policy, could say no to the deployment request.

Brown is just one of many critics who have voiced serious concerns about militarizing border communities by placing the National Guard for an undetermined amount of time-with military officials saying the move would be construed as needlessly aggressive by US allies to the south and others saying the deployment would amount to an huge waste of resources.

The move has heightened tensions with Mexico, whose President Enrique Pena Nieto said Mr Trump's "threatening or disrespectful attitudes" were unjustified.

Trump tweeted early Wednesday that the US has "very weak" border laws. Arizona, which unlike OR shares a border with Mexico, has long sought to address the adverse effects of illegal immigration.
