Trump Skipping Americas Summit to Oversee Syria Response

  • The summit ‘s success will depend partly on how Trump interprets the National Security Strategy

"At the President's request, the Vice President will travel in his stead".

Vice President Mike Pence will travel to the gathering instead, according to a statement by White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

President Donald Trump's decision to skip a summit in South America might hinder his policy goals in the region. In that time, however, he has undertaken more distant trips to Europe, Asia and the Middle East on several occassions.

One video shared by activists showed bodies of about a dozen children, women and men, some with foam at the mouth. Security Council will meet twice on Monday following rival requests by Russian Federation and the United States.

Trump said late Monday that the US will respond "forcefully" to a suspected chemical weapons attack by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime over the weekend, after suggesting earlier that Russian President Vladimir Putin may share responsibility. It's scheduled to begin on April 13. Also, his position on immigration and recent comments against countries in the area considered offensive augured another reason for disagreement in the forum.

Trump is also annoyed that the FBI investigators have raided the office and hotel room of his personal lawyer, which the President said was "disgraceful" of them, although they were just doing their jobs and they do have cause to suspect this lawyer of various wrongdoings. He would not describe the USA response or say when it would come.

White House officials said the decision to miss the summit was made Monday, adding that the raid of the office of Trump attorney Michael Cohen was not a factor in the decision. Trump's response to the attack has still not been disclosed, but there will be one coming, he assured.

"If he does it's going to be very tough, very tough", Trump said. "I don't like talking about timing", he said. Maduro was disinvited from the gathering last month, an unusual diplomatic break among Latin American nations that US analysts consider a positive sign.

Pence has been among the most vocal Maduro critics, and he is now expected to criticize Maduro at the summit.

The region has gotten little mention from Trump's White House except as a source of migrants, drugs and gang violence that the president blames Mexico and other neighbors for failing to stem.
