Uber is not just for hailing rides anymore

  • Uber to acquire self-service bicycle firm

Bruce Schaller, an urban transportation expert, said there are about 55,000 Uber, Lyft and other ride-sharing drivers in New York City, a metropolis of 8 million people, eight times bigger than San Francisco.

Since its founding in 2009, Uber has expanded rapidly. Getaround operates in 10 United States cities, including San Francisco, Chicago, Washington DC, Boston, and Los Angeles.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the company wouldn't resume testing its self-driving cars until the NTSB was complete. One is an expansion of Uber Bike by Jump into Washington, DC, which is a bike rental program the company was first piloted in San Francisco earlier this year. "We share numerous same goals as the 600 cities we serve, and are committed to addressing the same challenges: Reducing individual vehicle ownership, expanding transportation access and helping governments plan future transportation investments".

To be sure, it's unlikely Uber will ever be able to replicate the scale of public transit, even with its many bus-like services like Express Pool.

The company just completed a deal to acquire acquired bike-sharing service Jump. Upon completion, users can then lock the bike to any public rack in the designated zone shown on the app's map.

So Uber is looking for new ways where it can expand and wean people off owning cars. It's too expensive. But now, mom could reserve an electric bike for her commute back home, dad could rent a minivan for his biweekly grocery trip, and the resident teen could order delivery because she hates dad's cooking-all while that weird cousin borrows the actual family vehicle to go on a camping trip. Getaround lets users rent private cars from their owners - often at costs cheaper than auto rental companies - and allows owners to make money on their vehicles when they aren't using them. "Now you can take a bike to rent your auto and go buy groceries".

And Uber is out to rectify the situation and as an important step, the cab aggregator has developed and released an app for the drivers, which could mitigate many such complaints from the drivers. You'll be able to get an Uber.

This is what the options for a multi-transit trip looks like in the expanded Uber app.

Khosrowshahi announced three partnerships on Wednesday. Also today, Uber announced a partnership with London-based Masabi, a mobile ticketing company that Uber said will help customers book and use public transit tickets directly within the Uber app.
