US Senate to grill new secretary of state

  • Lawmakers to Hear From Pompeo, Mattis in Midst of Syria Crisis

But Pompeo's openly hawkish position on Syria seems to be at odds with previous statements made by Trump, making Pompeo a controversial, and perhaps extremely consequential, choice for secretary of state.

Pompeo wants to ensure the State Department is a relevant player in national security policy, a source close to him told Fox News.

The hearing comes amid a range of pressing foreign policy questions for the United States, including how to respond to a suspected chemical attack in Syria, how to handle relations with North Korea, and how to counter various aggressions from Russian Federation.

In an an advance copy of his remarks to the senators, Pompeo was quoted as saying that Iran has not paid enough of a price for its "dangerous activities".

As secretary of state, Pompeo would represent the United States and its interests overseas, and the state department is responsible for the protection of USA citizens around the world.

When asked if Mueller's termination would cause him to consider leaving the State Department, Pompeo said: "My instincts tell me no".

Pompeo also said he has "never advocated for regime change", though in July he appeared to suggest taking just such a step.

Listing the measures taken by the Trump White House to tame Moscow, Pompeo mentioned the planned United States military build-up, modernization of its nuclear arsenal, as well as rounds of punitive measures against Russian Federation.

"If there is absolutely no chance which we may fix it, I will recommend to the president which people work together with our allies to attain a far better outcome and also to reach a superior deal", Pompeo explained.

Gaffney's think tank alleged that mosques and Muslims across the US were trying to "Islamize" the country by using American pluralism and democracy to their advantage. "To do that, we need a strong diplomatic corps, and an aid that complements and enhances our foreign policy".

Pompeo said at the Aspen Institute last July that the administration's priority is to separate Kim from the nuclear weapons he controls.

"We have a higher standard to make sure we understand precisely what took place, precisely who did it so that our response can meet the threat", Pompeo said.

The main goal of the speech Pompeo is to convince senators that he intends to strengthen the Department of State and to restore its importance as a major player in the politics of national security, reports the Agency the words of the official, who asked not to give his name.

Democrats on the Senate committee have also questioned Pompeo's closeness to the president and whether he would challenge Trump on critical matters.

Pompeo is seen as more hawkish than Tillerson, for example, as an outspoken opponent of the global nuclear agreement with Iran. He was a vocal critic of the Iran Deal and supports the President's plan to eventually scrap it.

He said the current administration was determined to work diplomatically with the Chinese government in an effort to develop a more productive bilateral partnership.

Paul had an opportunity to schedule a private meeting with Pompeo prior to his confirmation hearings (which started Thursday morning) to ask him about his positions on Iraq and enhanced interrogation. "If so, please provide details". Pompeo joined other members of the president's national security staff to warn that doing so would be a mistake, CNN reported.

He added that the US has fewer Americans in Syria today than it did earlier in the USA campaign to defeat the Islamic State who had seized large swaths of territory in Syria and Iraq in 2014.
