Hurricane names Harvey, Irma, Maria and Nate retired

The World Meteorological Organization, the global body responsible for naming hurricanes, says it will no longer use Harvey, Irma, Maria and Nate to name hurricanes.

The WMO's Hurricane Committee, which is meeting in France to review how bad last year's season was, retires name if a storm is extremely deadly or costly.

As The Washington Post reported, hurricane names started to be retired after the 1954 hurricane season, when three devastating storms hit the East Coast. In the Atlantic and Eastern North Pacific, male and female names alternate alphabetically, and the lists are used every six years.

The names have been replaced by Harold, Idalia, Margot and Nigel.

With these four additions, a total of 86 names have been retired from the Atlantic basin list since 1953. With 17 named storms, the 2017 season was the fifth-most active since record keeping began in 1851. In 2005, five storm names, including Katrina, were retired - the most for a single season. The catastrophic hurricane made seven landfalls, four of which occurred as a category 5 hurricane across the northern Caribbean Islands.

Harvey hit Texas Aug. 25, killing at least 68 people. Irma came ashore in southwest Florida as a Category 4 hurricane. Irma made landfall as a category 4 hurricane in the Florida Keys on September 10 and struck southwestern Florida as a category 3 the same day. In the US, seven direct deaths were reported, and an additional 85 indirect deaths occurred, 80 of which were in Florida. Maria killed 31 in Dominica and 65 in Puerto Rico. It also inflicted serious damage on some of the other islands of the northeastern Caribbean Sea.

Hurricane Nate didn't make landfall in the USA but slammed into Nicaragua and Panama as a Category 1, causing 44 deaths. But its rainfall brought flooding and mudslides that caused 44 deaths in Central America. An additional fatality in Panama was due to a "shipwreck", bringing the death toll directly associated with Nate to 45.
