UK Prime Minister Theresa May said she had authorized British armed forces "to conduct coordinated and targeted strikes to degrade the Syrian regime's chemical weapons capability".

She said: "This persistent pattern of behaviour must be stopped - not just to protect innocent people in Syria from the horrific deaths and casualties caused by chemical weapons but also because we can not allow the erosion of the global norm that prevents the use of these weapons".

The army said almost 110 missiles hit targets in the capital Damascus and other areas, and air defence systems brought a lot of them down.

The US, UK and France have bombed multiple government targets in Syria in retaliation for a suspected chemical weapons attack by the regime of Bashar al-Assad on a Damascus suburb last week.

The Pentagon held a press conference following the airstrikes on Saturday, saying that the strike hit all its targets, and "attacked the heart of the Syrian chemical weapons program".

"A perfectly executed strike last night", Mr. Trump said. A combined operation with the armed forces of France and the United Kingdom is now underway.

In his statement, President Trump also reprimanded Russian Federation and Iran for supporting Syria in using chemical weapons against its citizens. "We are prepared to sustain this response until the Syrian regime stops its use of prohibited chemical agents".

Trump took to Twitter and thanked his allies in the attack as well.

At a Pentagon briefing Friday, U.S. officials described the strikes as a joint operation consisting of British, American and French forces.

The gas attack, as claimed by him killed at least 40 people.

"A large part of its chemical arsenal has been destroyed".

The Syrian government condemned the targeted overnight airstrikes by the United States, France and Britain. Russian Federation has several military bases and thousands of troops in Syria, and the USA said Friday that it did not coordinate with or notify Russian Federation of the strikes.

She said it sent a message to anyone who used chemical weapons, and came after efforts to use diplomatic channels were "repeatedly thwarted".

But Trump says America does not seek "an indefinite presence" in Syria and will look to pull out its troops once the Islamic State is totally defeated.

Trump criticized Russian Federation and Iran, Syria's two key allies, for their roles in supporting "murderous dictators". "We can not take such risks", said Dvorkovich, speaking at a forum. He called on Moscow to change course and join the US and its allies in seeking a more responsible regime in Syria.

"Russia must decide if it will continue down this dark path or if it will join with civilized nations as a force for stability and peace", Trump added.
