Bizarre penalty helps Mainz past relegation rivals Freiburg

  • Mainz VAR penalty

In what is quite possibly the most ridiculous VAR gaffe yet, Mainz and Freiburg players were called back out onto the pitch for a penalty after leaving for half-time.

Freiburg's players went straight to the dressing room after the half-time whistle when referee Guido Winkmann referred a potential penalty to the VAR. Referee Guido Winkmann initially allowed the game to play on, denying Mainz a penalty, before blowing for halftime shortly thereafter.

"It leaves a bitter taste", Freiburg sporting director Jochen Saier said while speaking to Eurosport at half-time.

The teams neutralised each other's actions on the pitch with the result that clear-cut chances were at a premium in the first 45 minutes.

Mainz midfielder Pablo de Blasis scored from the spot to give his side the lead, he then added another after 78 minutes to secure the 2-0 victory.

The Bundesliga clash was already eventful enough with ongoing protests aimed towards the league's hierarchy for playing the match on a Monday, and a VAR incident which plunged the match into disarray.

Mainz began the day three points behind their relegation rivals and a win would see them move into 16th place and shove their rivals into a relegation playoff place.

"But for us who try to attend every game in the stadium it's quite hard to travel on Monday to a match".

The VAR system has been used in the Bundesliga this season but not without controversy as it has been at the centre of several disputed decisions.

With concerns remaining, the Premier League have opted not to adopt the technology for next season, however it will be used at this summer's World Cup in Russian Federation.
