He said the first scenario could be early elections on August 26 as Bahceli proposed, or Erdogan could insist that elections take place on the dates already established.

Erdogan should have waited until next year to be able to rule Turkey under an executive presidency.

Such a situation and the readiness of the Nationalist Movement Party and the Justice and Development Party testify that other parties will not have any chance of winning the parliamentary election.

"Even though it seems as if there are no serious issues because the administration and the presidency work compatibly, the diseases of the old system pop up at every step", Erdogan said Wednesday.

Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) spokesman Bülent Tezcan urged the government not to extend the state of emergency over worries that it would cast shadow over the elections. The snap elections will be held under the state of emergency.

The system was changed in an April 2017 referendum that was narrowly won by the government's "yes" camp.

The idea of an early poll was initially proposed by nationalist allies. Tens of thousands have also been dismissed from their state jobs in the judiciary, civil service, police, military, media and academia.

"By calling snap elections for June, Erdogan is signaling that he believes his support, at least for the near future, has peaked".

The European Union, the body for which Turkey seeks membership, has called on the country to end its emergency rule, saying that it has resulted in human rights violations such as torture and arbitrary detention.

Turkey's lira firmed against the dollar after Erdogan's announcement and was at 4.0140 at 1815 GMT. His powers were already extended through a constitutional referendum a year ago, amid a massive crackdown following a 2016 failed coup attempt. The yield on Turkey's benchmark bond fell some 10 basis points.

"A continued depreciation of the currency would likely negatively impact voter behavior and may jeopardize Erdogan's plans for victory", said Paul Greer, a portfolio manager at Fidelity International in London.
