Chemical weapons inspectors reach Syrian town

The U.N. security team entered Douma to assess the situation ahead of the planned visit by inspectors from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) worldwide watchdog, said the sources, who had been briefed on the team's deployment.

The shooting occurred during a site visit to Douma, ahead of an expected visit to the area by a team of chemical weapons experts who have been delayed for days.

"We can not allow the use of chemical weapons to become normalised, either within Syria, on the streets of the United Kingdom, or elsewhere", May said - linking the chemical attack in Syria with the poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter last month with a military-grade nerve agent in the English city of Salisbury.

For example, chlorine, which the United States assesses was used in the April 7 attack, is a common industrial chemical that is not hard to find or weaponize, experts say.

However, survivors reached by The Associated Press said they were overwhelmed by the smell of chlorine on the night of April 7. Several said a odd smell started spreading and people screamed, "It's chlorine!"

The missiles that US, French and British warships fired on suspected chemical facilities on Saturday constituted the biggest Western attack against the regime in the seven-year war to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Don't underestimate the power of her message or the example she set by doing something that was so controversial at the time. In 2013, she attended the same-sex wedding in Kennebunkport, Maine, of her friends Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen.

But Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the action had been "legally questionable" and called for a new law to cement the convention that had been in place since 2003 that the government must seek permission from Parliament for military strikes.

The lab contained chlorine and various ingredients for mustard gas, Russian chemical weapons specialist Alexander Rodionov said in comments carried by state news agency TASS.

Except for the Russian and Syrian troops patrolling the streets, few people could be seen in Douma, the majority of its residents now displaced to rebel-held areas to the north.

Members of the organization's Fact Finding Mission are in Syria attempting to investigate the alleged chemical attack on Douma, but have still not visited the town 11 days after the incident.

"They probably want to do that because they recognize that the longer that a site goes untested, the more that the elements, the chemicals, can start to disappear", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told Alhurra television.

The Russian military said a Syrian security employee was slightly wounded in the crossfire Tuesday, but no Russian servicemen were at the site of the attack. The team was also forced to withdraw from another visited site due to security concerns.

The top-seeded Rockets had their hands full with the No. 8 Timberwolves on a night where Houston made just 10 of 37 3-pointers. Chris Paul added two free throws after that for Houston, but a tip-in by Karl-Anthony Towns got Minnesota back within 3.

But U.S. officials familiar with U.S. military planning said Russian Federation and Iran were never seriously considered as targets.

Syrian media reported another missile attack early Thursday in Homs province, but later said it was a false alarm and not an outside attack that triggered air defense systems.

The larger question about Syria is whether Russian Federation and the U.S. can co-operate in the endgame, to bring a lasting political settlement to the brutal, seven-year-long civil war. Many were found with foam around their mouths, an indicator for suffocation.

It was a big enough attack to rearrange the landscape around the alleged "chemical weapons-type targets", even if Syrian anti-aircraft fire shot down a few of the unmanned missiles (as the Syrians claim).

McKenzie was asked about reports that the Syrians had turned two unexploded cruise missiles over to the Russians. Separately, the AP spoke to a medic who was among those who later were evacuated to northern Syria. Activists say at least 40 people were killed. He said he tried to enter the shelter but was overcome by a strong smell of chlorine and his comrades pulled him out.
