  • His parents Tom Evans and Kate James are fighting to have him moved to a hospital in Rome

The Alfie Evans, 23-months, has been battling chronic seizures since 2016 as a result of an undiagnosed degenerative brain disease.

Alfie Evans, the child suffering from a neurological disease, is nearly certain to die in hospital after the Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal seeking to have him released to be treated overseas. In February 2018, Alder Hey won a legal decision that continued life support was not in the child's best interests. His parents, Tom Evans and Kate James, have fought a legal battle to stop the Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, northwest England, from turning off his ventilator - which would quickly end his life.

But today, justices dismissed their application.

Three appeal court judges had endorsed a plan drawn up by doctors this week.

A Supreme Court spokeswoman said: "Having considered submissions from the parties 'on paper", in the usual way, the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom has refused permission for the parents to appeal'.

Alfie's father, Thomas Evans, met with Francis before the pope's general audience and asked him to make a public appeal about the value of life.

"The president of Bambino GesĂș called me in for a meeting". She even wanted to come and meet him herself and still does. The protesters were disturbing other patients and intimidating hospital staff, the hospital said.

"Pray hard this is Alfie's step to his desperately needed transfer", he said.

"I've got a letter handed to me on behalf of the Pope and the hospital president showing how much they want to take Alfie on", he added. Straight after interviews with various countries' media - a lot of them.

Alfie's father responded angrily to the decision. "We have been trying our best to find out his condition to treat or manage it". There will be no further stay of the Court of Appeal's order.

Alfie's parents filed a petition to the Supreme Court after the UK Court of Appeal ruled this Monday against the parents' argument that their son was being unlawfully detained by the hospital. "We see life and potential in our son and we want to bring him here to Italy, at Bambino GesĂș, where we know he is safe and he will not be euthanised".
