  • Fugitive double murder suspect Lois Riess is arrested, Minnesota sheriff says

The U.S. Marshals and local police located Riess at a nearby bar and arrested her without incident.

Riess, described as a 5-foot-5, 165-pound woman with brown eyes and blonde hair, was already accused of fatally shooting her husband, David, in Minnesota last month - then going on the run across the country.

Riess was wanted for allegedly killing her husband and a woman authorities believe she targeted because she looked just like her. Riess then allegedly stole the woman's auto and identification.

"She came in; she asked to see the menu", he said. She had apparently befriended two other people on the island and were with them at the time of her arrest, police said.

Minnesota court records show that Riess was suspended as guardian for her disabled 61-year-old sister after a report that she had been transferring funds from a guardianship account to her own account, then withdrawing funds at a casino.

Riess is accused of stealing Hutchinson's vehicle, a white Acura TL with Florida license plate Y37TAA, before fleeing the state.

Her arrest comes four days after Hutchinson's auto was seen about 50 miles from Corpus Christi, Texas. "You played a significant part in helping us capture Riess and ending her risky crime spree", continued Berger.

The woman wanted in an alleged multistate crime spree has been apprehended in Texas, near the U.S. -Mexico border. "Our detectives are on the ground right now working to see exactly where she will be", said Marceno. She also traveled to Northwood, Iowa, where she spent most of the day gambling at Diamond Jo Casino, the Dodge County Sheriff's Office said. Her identity was confirmed by officers and the vehicle she was using was towed and impounded "for forensic processing", Soto said.

U.S. Marshals had elevated her disappearance to "major case" status, putting her among some of the nation's most unsafe offenders, the newspaper report said. Law enforcement recieved a tip that Riess was in South Padre Island, Texas.

Riess faces warrants in Lee County on second degree murder, grand theft, identity theft, and grand theft auto.

She was apparently headed to Florida.

"At some point in time (she) will have no resources", Marceno said.

In Lee County, Fla., undersheriff Carmine Marceno told reporters Friday that he wants Riess to appear in court there as soon as possible. SPIPD is awaiting the arrival of Minnesota and Florida investigators so the three groups can form a "unified plan" of investigation, Smith said.
