  • French President Emmanuel Macron greets President Trump at an arrival ceremony Tuesday at the White House

European countries and the United States are talking about a new Iran deal to assuage President Donald Trump's loathing for the existing nuclear pact.

French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking before a joint session of Congress, warned the USA against retreating from the global community.

He continued, "And you know how Macron's BFF, Trump, has repeatedly said that global warming is a fraud?"

At a joint briefing with Trump on Tuesday, Macron had said that his new deal was based on four pillars, which he said were the JCPOA, extending the freeze on Iran's nuclear weapons programme beyond 2025, ending Iran's ballistic missiles programme, and curtailing its influence in the Middle East, especially Yemen, Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon.

France, the U.S. as well as Russia, Germany, China, the United Kingdom and the European Union are signatories to the agreement with Iran.

Macron believes that "Donald Trump will get rid of the Iran deal for domestic reasons", he told me and a small group of journalists on Wednesday.

Trump has set a May 12 deadline for European allies to agree to a supplemental deal to cover what he sees as gaps in the worldwide accord or else he will essentially withdraw the United States from the agreement.

Stoltenberg added: "Your valued and long experience will make you a flawless person to be the top diplomat of the United States".

He said: "I think this is what we've been agreeing upon today ..."

Macron also made a full-throated argument for global action to combat climate change, built around the 2015 Paris accord, which Trump announced in June he was walking away from.

It's something supporters have touted as another example of why Pompeo is ready for the job as the country's top diplomat. Ultimately, seven members of the Senate Democratic caucus - five of whom face re-election this year in states that Mr.

While declaring France's position to stay with the Iran deal, Macron sought to allay the concerns of Trump and his conservative allies, declaring: "Iran shall never possess any nuclear weapon. Not now, not in five years, not in 10 years, never". He clearly said, "We signed it, both the United States and France. We are in our own region and it is legitimate", he said. Republican lawmakers noted Pompeo's close relationship to Trump will be a great asset on the world stage. "It will not douse, but inflame, the fears of our citizens", he said. "If we open our eyes wider, we will become stronger".

Christopher Ford, the United States assistant secretary for worldwide security and nonproliferation, said he hoped the deal "has been saved in the context of the challenge that President Trump set for us".

Iran's president on Wednesday ruled out any changes or additions to the accord. He also targeted several Iranian businesses and individuals with new sanctions. "The word we use is 'never.' The time restrictions relate to voluntary limits on our nuclear energy program that we have undertaken to give the worldwide community confidence that we are honest in our intentions".

Pompeo, who was confirmed as the US' new top diplomat on Thursday, has been an outspoken critic of the deal. "Absent a substantial fix, absent overcoming the shortcomings, the flaws of the deal, he is unlikely to stay in that deal past this May".

Iran has said it will ramp up its nuclear program if the deal collapses and a senior Iranian official said Tehran might quit a treaty created to stop the spread of nuclear weapons if Trump scrapped the agreement.
