Plane crashes into road moments after take-off - police confirm 'no survivors'

Television footage and images on social media showed thick clouds of black smoke billowing from the crash site about 175 miles southeast of Atlanta.

Puerto Rican officials say nine people were aboard the military plane that crashed in Savannah Wednesday and that there are no apparent survivors, according to the Associated Press.

Rivera said the plane last received maintenance at the military base in Savannah in April.

Authorities don't yet know what caused a military cargo plane to crash Wednesday after taking off from a Savannah airport, a spokesman for the Georgia Air National Guard said.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Hwy 21 at Crossgrate Road and those roads are closed.

A spokesman for the Georgia Air National Guard said in a news conference that airmen on the plane had been killed, but he would not confirm any details until investigators had more information about who was on the plane.

"It didn't look like it nosedived, but it nearly looked like it stalled and just went nearly flat right there in the middle of the highway", Jones said, describing how people stopped and got out of their cars following the explosion.

One witness said the plane made a "loud, odd noise" just before the crash.

The C-130 Hercules cargo plane crashed Wednesday at the intersection of two roads at 11.30am.

The governor's statement says the names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of their families. Attorney Randy Reep, a longtime jet pilot in the Air National Guard, also pointed out how rare the disaster is for the type of plane.

A photo tweeted by the Savannah Professional Firefighters Association shows the tail end of a plane and a field of flames and black smoke as an ambulance stands nearby.

A WC-130 is a weather reconnaissance aircraft used by the Air Force and Air National Guard.

The U.S. Air Force confirmed to Reuters that there were fatalities but declined to provide a number.
