The revelations over Cambridge Analytica have prompted investigations on both sides of the Atlantic and led Facebook to tighten its policies on how personal data is shared and accessed.

The resulting investigation is now "in full swing", in the words of Ime Archibong, a Vice President of Product Partnerships at Facebook.

The roughly 200 suspended apps will now be subjected to a thorough investigation into whether they misused user data.

Today Facebook announced that after auditing "thousands of apps", it found and suspended "around 200" that were suspicious.

Facebook released an online statement saying the investigations are being conducted to ascertain any contraventions by over 200 APPs that are alleged to have been misusing private data.

In 2014, Facebook changed its policies so developers could no longer access the information of their app users' friends.

From the sound of it, Facebook is close to completing the first phase of its audit; which is identifying any apps that raise suspicions about the handling of user data. The suspended apps are pending further investigation, which will involve verified if any data was misused by the apps. Any app that either refused or failed an audit would be banned from Facebook, it said. Facebook confirmed Monday that the app was suspended April 7.

Facebook will be posting the results of its audit on a support page, though only in cases where it finds apps that have misused data.
